Yesterday we visited the Technical School, where students learn to be carpenters, welders, or electricians. Today we visited the Agricultural School, where students learn how to raise livestock or grow crops. I´ve been impressed by the work these schools (and El Hogar) are doing. Normally, public school in Honduras only runs through sixth grade. To attend, students need to buy uniforms and books. So, for many of the poor, attending public school is unaffordable. As a result, there is little upward mobility. If you are born poor, you tend to stay poor. Even though El Hogar only reaches a small number of students, they give students the skills they need to improve their situation, a huge accomplishment.
After we returned from the Agricultural School, we moved more sand to work on improving the drainage near the dormitories:
Tomorrow, we will be visiting the home of one of the students.
